WatchProper Brushing Technique
How to brush your teeth properly — a quick visual guide
Brushing twice a day is only half the equation — technique matters just as much as frequency. Most patients we see at Brammeier Dental of Naperville are surprised to learn they've been brushing with the wrong angle, the wrong motion, or for far less time than they thought. This short video shows the correct approach in under a minute.
The key details: tilt the bristles at a 45-degree angle toward the gumline, use small circular sweeping motions, and focus on just one or two teeth at a time. Plaque you miss starts releasing acid immediately, breaking down enamel and irritating gums — so the inside surfaces and the chewing surfaces matter as much as the visible front of your teeth.
Aim for a full two minutes, every morning and night, with flossing as part of the routine. Even a perfect home routine misses some plaque, which is why regular checkups and cleanings are essential — a professional cleaning removes the hardened tartar that brushing alone can't.
If your gums bleed when you brush, or you have questions about the right brush or technique for you, mention it at your next visit. Dr. Brammeier and our hygiene team are happy to demonstrate one-on-one.
